Babel kuang6/7/2023 ‘Babel’ is my love letter and breakup letter with Oxford and academia. “I started writing it while I was at Oxford and it is deeply influenced by the beauty of the place and the dark beauty that underwrites it. Norrell’ by Susanna Clarke,” Kuang said to Hearst Connecticut Media when the book was published in August 2022. I think it is the perfect novel for people who enjoyed ‘The Secret History’ by Donna Tartt or ‘Jonathan Strange & Mr. “ ‘Babel’ is a novel about the magic of translation, the illusion and allure of the academy and the violence of anticolonial resistance. After years of diligent study, Robin is enrolled in Babel where he and his three classmates become quick friends, but Robin is forced to face some harsh truths about Babel and his life at Oxford. Once in England, Robin is trained in Latin, Ancient Greek and Chinese so he can enroll in Oxford’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation, known as Babel. "Babel" tells the story of Robin Swift, who was orphaned by a cholera outbreak in 1828 China before being taken in by a mysterious Oxford professor. Kuang is a Marshall Scholar, Chinese-English translator, and the Astounding Award-winning and the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and World Fantasy Award nominated author of the Poppy War trilogy and the forthcoming Babel. Her work has won the Crawford Award and the Compton Crook Award for Best First Novel. “Imagine waking up in a hotel room in toronto and they’re telling u u won the Nebula BYE,” she wrote in the caption. John piper romans 96/7/2023 A big reason why I am in Utah today (and not closer to family on the East Coast) is that I believe that the God of Romans 9 can effectively call people to himself, including Mormons. But it was also something that, in the long-run, explosively enlarged my view of God and catapulted me forward with a confidence that God was far bigger than I ever imagined. It was something that, once it clicked, was hard for me to handle with maturity. It was something I originally vehemently disagreed with. It was a source of controversy in my college days. You see, Romans 9 and I have a history together. I also want you to know that I have an emotional and spiritual connection with this text, for a number of reasons. I only ask that you make a valiant effort at understanding the text itself before approaching the issues using traditional philosophy. I predict that what I will promote here is, for most of you, completely foreign to the worldview that you were brought up with. The following are notes from a Reformation Sunday sermon ( MP3) I preached last year on Romans 9:1-23 at a church in Santaquin, UT.

Carl of cosmos6/6/2023 They are all so vague that they could apply to anyone all so different from each other that they cannot respond to any rationale. He picks up several newspapers and reads out the fortunes for one sign: Libra. And, like any good advocate of rationalism, he took the opportunity to ridicule horoscopes. The legendary science communicator Carl Sagan provided a marvelous explanation in his Cosmos series, which aired in 1980. In ancient cultures, astrology also served the political power, which sought to control it, as, at the time, predicting the fall of a tyrant was tantamount to instigating his toppling. With progress, astrology was gradually replaced by astronomy - at the beginning they were the same thing. On top of that magic, those who gazed at the stars also observed their patterns, just as Ptolemy did many centuries before Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler became fascinated with them. There was something magical about the way the sky would appear unchanged when chaos prevailed on Earth. When prehistoric humans would put out their campfires at night, they were alone with the stars.

I know Ms Showalter and Kresley Cole are BFFs and they've talked about cameos and crossovers. Speaking of Torin, he needs a HEA stat! There was a brief mention of a female who caught his eye and I nearly squealed. I loved the brief glimpses into some of the other single Lords' lives. Sabin takes it upon himself to train her. Gwen who fights her inner harpy and years for a normal and peaceful existence has to learn to fight and control her dark side. The Harpies reminded me of the Valkyrie from the Immortals After Dark series. His lust mixes with his eagerness to use her as a weapon against their common enemy. The Lords save the women and Sabin finds himself drawn to her. She and other immortal females have been captured by the Hunters to be used for breeding. He lives for war the destruction of the Hunters is his only goal and passion. I wasn't sure if i'd like this story because all previous mentions of Sabin, Keeper of Doubt, didn't make me care for him very much.

The divines by ellie eaton6/5/2023 I know that sentence is full of contradictions, so let's just dive into my thoughts around this book.Īt a general level, The Divines is yet another all-girls boarding school story in which a group of elite girls, who calls themselves 'Divines' after the name of the school, are generally rebellious, problematic, and bullies as they navigate their formative years. The Divines is an interesting and difficult book to review because I simultaneously felt uncertain about it while also enjoying it, as well as simultaneously found it both introduced some memorable discussions, while also felt a bit forgettable. But the more Josephine recalls, the further her life unravels, derailing not just her marriage and career, but her entire sense of self. With each memory that resurfaces, she circles closer to the violent secret at the heart of the school’s scandal. Ruminating on the past, Josephine becomes obsessed with her teenage identity and the forgotten girls of her one-time orbit. The visit provokes blurry recollections of those doomed final weeks that rocked the community. Yet now Josephine inexplicably finds herself returning to her old stomping grounds.

Grrrls on the Side by Carrie Pack6/4/2023 Katy’s mother has sent her to sunny Los Angeles for the summer to stay with her former punk rock Dad aka The Rat. But things begin to shift for Tabby when she meets the out-and-proud Jackie Hardwick. There, Tabitha finally finds a place where she can feel like she belongs – amongst a community of radical outcast feminists. After picking up a zine from a punk concert, she discovers an advertisement for a Riot Grrrl meet-up. In 1994, when alternative punk is at its peak, Tabitha Denton struggles to find a place in the land of suburbia. Here are some YA books we found inspired by Riot Grrl and women in punk music: Grr r ls on the Side by Carrie Pack After watching the movie, and reading the book – we too were craving more stories set, or inspired by this radical time in history. Heavily inspired by the riot grrrl– a feminist manifesto birthed by the 1980s/90s all-girl punk bands, women and music lovers were able to find a safe space where they could express the freedom to be angry. So you’ve watched Moxie – Netflix’s adaption of Jennifer Mathieu’s feminist YA book about a group of high school girls clapping back at the patriarchal system with an empowering zine and kick-ass riot grrrl soundtrack – and you want more. |
