After picking up a zine from a punk concert, she discovers an advertisement for a Riot Grrrl meet-up. In 1994, when alternative punk is at its peak, Tabitha Denton struggles to find a place in the land of suburbia. Here are some YA books we found inspired by Riot Grrl and women in punk music: Grr r ls on the Side by Carrie Pack After watching the movie, and reading the book – we too were craving more stories set, or inspired by this radical time in history. Heavily inspired by the riot grrrl– a feminist manifesto birthed by the 1980s/90s all-girl punk bands, women and music lovers were able to find a safe space where they could express the freedom to be angry. So you’ve watched Moxie – Netflix’s adaption of Jennifer Mathieu’s feminist YA book about a group of high school girls clapping back at the patriarchal system with an empowering zine and kick-ass riot grrrl soundtrack – and you want more.
